Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

1985

As a kid, I finished the original Friday disappointed at the lack of hockey mask action. A short time later, I came home from Pizza Hut with my parents to some exciting news: there was a marathon on USA Network and my brother was taping Part V; I was finally going to see Jason do his thing!
Typing that now feels like asking to see the basement of the Alamo.

Re-watched this with commentary by Danny Steinmann, John Shepherd, and…

The Monday after this came out, I told my co-worker Erik it was a pretty solid reboot, combining aspects of the first four movies. He was a nice guy, so-so at his job, and had a habit of reading about two sentences of an article before intuiting the rest. So, it wasn't a big surprise when an hour later I overheard him say to a customer: "have you seen the new Friday the 13th? It's four hours long!"

A little…

Mad Max: Finnish Road
Leaving his days as a legendarily effective soldier behind him, Aatami is content to live out his days as a gold prospector. Just as soon as he, his trusty steed, and adorable hound strike it rich, they find themselves under attack by the SS--if you are like me, you are nervous about how much longer his sweet, puffball of a dog has left to live.
But zee Germans have crossed the wrong Laplander. Armed with his…

In the midst of WWII, a regiment of German soldiers guarding a remote Romanian village keep dying at the hands of a supernatural force.
Ratzis getting whacked? Seems like a lack of conflict to me.
The abundance of servicemen--several thieves and would-be rapists--getting their shit Ark of the Covenant-ed in this mysterious fortress acts as a beacon, drawing the interest of several diverse parties: an S(adistic)S(tubborn) officer who suspects partisans among the village are responsible, a frail historian who conspires…

My oldest brother was the most protective when it came to what my impressionable young eyes saw, so he should have been more careful when describing this as “the movie where a zombie bites into the guy's head like a jelly donut.” Hearing it assured nothing was gonna keep me from sneaking out of my room and seeing that!

Staked a claim and caught this in the theater--and didn’t even need the extra prodding from Tom Cruise--with my brother from another mother, which is fitting given we spent many a night in high school and college watching (and rewatching) the kind of genre fare that make up this film’s DNA: Romero, Rodriguez, Carpenter, Crossroads, Demon Knight, O Brother, Near Dark, etc. Coogler synthesizes all those influences and more into a bloody good southern vampiric siege set to the rowdy…
