when hannah and i corner one person who’s willing to watch anything you best believe we are going to rope that person into our accidental bit. this time hannah and i turned to each other and were like “actually i think we love this movie” 

we don’t even care if anyone sees what we see just know that we will be singing baby annette for the rest of the week

parts were good (steve carell) parts were heinous (terrible terrible plot line with jessica and robbie and that Whole Mess. het business is weird) but i had to actively hold back tears the whole time. amazing scene where everything converged and all plot lines were able to come together. overall too long 

ate the burger from burger boy during this one. i don’t know what we were doing all week by eating whataburger because burger boy so easily sures the whataburger experience even cold! i would not eat a cold whataburger. i would eat a cold burger boy. 

for one, the synchronicity and harmony of the burger boy burger is locked and loaded. clearly the patty was given a bit of a flavor town treatment that i suspect was the centerpiece that tied everything together when it came to the burger’s symphony. i think a burger can definitely be done lazy, this one was not. it was perfected. it wasn’t afraid to have sauce. and the integrity of the burger itself was something to be ired; it kept its structure until the very end with few drips. i will long for this burger again

i was expecting more narration but malcolm x fr already left behind so much for us to understand him in his own words. a worthy doc that champions the value of the things that get left behind of someone this outspoken and prolific

probably the most interesting use of a budget for what normally would be a straightforward music biopic. clearly a beloved band and clearly a film made with the spirit of the band in mind. i was in attendance for the musical and it was what got me really into the band even though i knew it was intended to be kinda goofy. wished i could’ve seen more of the range life movie, wish the musicals moments didn’t end up being as funny in the edit (although that sincere bit at the end got me and it’s hard for the musical Not to come off that funny)

so glad that joe keery is funny in this. need more funny joe keery moments

idyllic sunday movie. it’s making me wax poetic like im nicole kidman roaming around an amc theater. 

i love the children’s drawings and the whimsy, the emphasis on the joy and creativity of nature and the value in being childlike. lights up a whole town, leaves me feeling optimistic and jubilant. 

reminded me of the lightness in ghibli films (especially the clock tower guy at the beginning of kiki) and had me wondering if lynch and miyazaki have seen this? they Had to have seen this

absolutely gutted that i will never have the commanding swag of mourek in his little sunglasses. so badass. after seeing his powers in action i now know the world couldn’t handle him without them. swag too powerful

okkkkkk whyyyyyy does this have the fucking sauce bro!!!!!! visually it was so compelling and tight that i didn’t mind how absolutely idiotic everyone was. i’m still such a sucker for practical effects and corny makeup. loved the motif of close up shots of everyone’s eyes, including all the teens exclaiming about them. not well versed in 80s horror but i’m sure this set a few tropes in stone for the genre

classic sal: male friendship, tim robinson, and Weird. never could guess what this was going to do next and still had me tethered to the palpable discomfort of a social menace. i love to grimace at this man’s antics. this one’s a career high for tim robinson

cherry on top? unexpected conner o malley cameo. many aspects of this movie felt like a dark sided take on rap world

as a movie this is terrible and there are so many points where i can tell that there was a complete re-edit cause i wasnt getting all the wink wink spiderman universe shit (i literally laughed after my sister pointed out that no, there isnt a budding romance happening between two characters, they just pause like that to be like "uncle ben fuckuing parker just subtly insinuated that he met aunt may HOW EXCITING you NERDS") but as a dakota johnson vehicle this is an important document. we should lose the dedication to lore more often and not just cause of copyright limitations because we end up with this mangled trainwreck of a failed blockbuster that oddly harbors some editing and cinematography of a yearning creative hand.

reminds me of the magnetism of freaks as it exists in ghost world. this is like ghost world for boys. makes sense considering that owen kline picked out crumb from the criterion closet and was like this is it. the movie that ive seen hundreds of times. 

miles was by far the character i rooted for the most and i like that the movie knows it despite his friend being a huge asshole to him, but that’s also classic coming of age protagonist shit. i just like that there isn’t something for him to learn in big neon letters at the end. the weirdos, while sincerely weird, were pretty endearing. kind of like when nathan encounters someone more nuts than him on his shows. there’s so many ways to live a life. 

getting sooo back into comics as a result of this

i was the only person in office and it was so eerily quiet that i just threw this on while doing tasks and seriously did not realize how sweet this is???? it’s a really fun premise. blonde gay ewan mcgregor really is everythingggggg id also do anything for him

thoroughly charming and surprisingly not offensive given when it came out. also definitely way more sad that i thought. i wonder what the irl guys think of this movie? need more movies about these niche nutso true stories they are so fun

pondered upon this for days cause i didn’t expect to be swept up in this the way i did for something i wouldn’t care for based on description alone. love a story with a protagonist/hero who’s not really that remarkable at all
it’s like he’s being subsumed by the workings of aristocracy, every zoom out shot enveloping you, realizing how big and beautiful the whole thing is. and then also remarking how much these wide shots resemble paintings, which reminds you this is staged and blocked; this is a movie. 

i love movies with intermission, and i love to see a big fuckin film in the morning

showed up like half an hour late on accident so i really can’t say much until i see it in full! but im so excited to see people so excited for a movie just like when barbenheimer was happening. it was near impossible to find a screening of this in nyc and we ended up having to go to a theater far from home. and even then the seats were all full. you can never tell me that movie theaters are going extinct!

i expected to like this a lot more but it ended up all being tainted by the transmisogyny. i get what almodóvar is trying to do with this (if the end quote wasn’t obvious enough) but i think after a week of getting through copious amounts of queer/trans archival material, my tolerance for terf shit is very very low. i can appreciate its aesthetics and melodrama, but id be happy to leave something like this in the past.

i can probably appreciate this more on a rewatch (i definitely felt endeared to agrado, thanks to a great performance) but i wasn’t left with the feelings that i think almodóvar was trying to achieve here.

originally watched this maybe two or three years ago and i think i assumed i never finished it but i ended up ing way more than i thought? including the ending

parker posey queen of my heart! her physicality and attitude is intoxicating! so early in her career does she prove that she is so fabulous and fun to watch onscreen. 

some parts of this don’t work super well for me but it hits many of my soft spots, the biggest one being that it makes me proud to work in a public library. for the record, when i’m alone and im reshelving or organizing i dance too.

ten years later and im still fully in the pocket of this movie. this was the first time i noticed that when rictus dies, he just yells "rictuuuuusssss!!!!!" which is so hilarious next to nux's final emotional "witness me"

i was a little higher than i needed to be to watch this and it left me feeling so uncomfortable at the end that i had to immediately interrupt the ominous credits music and play something else on the streaming service i was using just for the sake of cleansing my palate. like, even though i was tired i could not go straight to bed like that lol.

obviously a precursor to inception, but what it does better than inception is that as a viewer, you're kind of supposed to get lost in its layers and do a little meandering. its best moments aren't the mindblowing reveals or plot development: the world in this is so strange, so disembodied and off that i felt like i just wanted to fall deeper into its ideas. and for 1999, it ends up being not just a meditation on the growing closeness between humans and "digital space," but the effect of the materiality of the technology. like another film that came out the same year, the matrix explores the relationship between humans and this still new-to-us idea of "cyberspace," but where cronenberg goes a step further is showing a relationship to hardware that is close to, if not literally parasitic.

like think of it this way: i am addicted to being on my iphone, like practically everyone with a smartphone is. the social internet has been proven to intentionally be addictive, and for a lot of these sites, the addiction is one of constant participation. my online profile will only be as relevant and active as my buy-in is attention wise. and that involves participating in a way that maintains my online presence like a pet. just like allegra, we who participate in the social internet have these impulses to stay inside the loop, stay inside the world, maintain our presence by showing we are present. it's not that far from the framework of a "game," as the numbers really do "mean something." our lives online depend on our addiction to stay "alive," to stay present and connected. the parasite gives us a reason to maintain a presence.

unlike the world of existenz, our smartphones are steel and glass. yet for whoever owns one, they are primary to our daily lives. the anxiety i feel when i think i've lost my phone is like losing a piece of me. when i'm online, when i'm in the "game," it gets increasingly difficult to tell the real from the fabricated; contexts are lost, fragmented, and manipulated. and yet i do experience a version of freedom that is unmatched to what i experience in my meatspace life. like a previous cronenberg film points out, the fleshiness onscreen to be found in our real lives is the screen. existenz reiterates: long live the new flesh, and further adapts it for the exponential growth we were hurtling towards with the advent of the internet.

"it's not sexy, electricity drives me insane" has to be the funniest line in the funniest scene, because he's sooooooo right about that. the ripping of his shirt, the lightning, depp's corny performance. he does well being as corny as possible. him screaming in the jail scene........

wild! visuals so potent that i now scoff at my (albeit skeptical) enchantment around euphoria (probably my first encounter with media that was queer, apocalyptic, and aesthetically aware and neurotic).

this, i feel, is where araki's goofy dialogue plays best in its over the top, flamboyant language. feels so timeless in it's aesthetics and themes, making this the most for me to chew in the teen apocalypse trilogy. gasped multiple times at the fates of these characters and their kaleidoscopic bedrooms. so colorful and surreal, it leads me to see jules in euphoria as the sole character who invokes and embodies an araki character in the whole show. so interested to see his pilot next, a premise for which would practically consider euphoria a lesser, yet spiritual embodiment of the same ideas. just last morning i was iring the kafka exhibit at the morgan on a work outing, and thinking about how kafka insisted that gregor samsa in metamorphosis was a bug with no specific species in mind, going so far as to ensure that no depictions of bugs/insects ended up on the cover. smart move. i sure wasn't expecting that one

an unfortunate movie for my partner to me in watching halfway through. he had absolutely no idea what was going on

there is so much that felt off about this personally. i certainly had a worse experience while watching jack and jill, since i was pretty charmed by this setup regardless (Drew Barrymore I Love You). i like how much everyone cares for lucy

but id be horrified if i had to be lucy. like what the fuck. i have to wake up every single day and be like damn this is my life i guess. some guy who says he’s my boyfriend is just in my house now. like the constant cycle of having your reality shattered is so dark and not that romantic to me, it just feels so tragic that the tone it takes at the end had me feeling kinda nuts

this was probably one of the very few movies where i kinda wished i watched this at home (next to the piano teacher) solely because i could not stand having to listen to what anyone leaving the theater had to say at all no matter what it was about. i felt like i was suffocating on its bare faced violence and the manipulation it takes to execute that violence, and it left me breathless and trapped. no wonder that’s the shot it leaves you with, these two characters barely into adulthood but already feeling fucking hopeless, the darkness literally closing in on them as they sit and feel the weight of this thing already eating them alive. 

fucking incredible film in its ability to implicate you as a viewer without solely depending on the shock of its evils. i’m not surprised at how many people leave reviews saying that they never want to see this again. it feels inappropriate to be thrown back into the world after it’s over. it feels so inappropriately abrupt, but we do live in a world where these things occur, and it makes me feel fucking insane. and yet, there’s so much sympathy for how araki puts together this narrative. i see how much his characters hurt just to stay alive, many meeting a fate that seems nihilistic and bleak, but i can’t quite put into words at how much this gives me a reason to push back as much as fucking possible. 

i could probably say a million more things about this, but i’ll just save them for myself a bit. will be thinking about this for a while, probably.

technically i did not watch this but attended a live reading of the script by a bunch of fun cool talented and gay actors. i kind of hated this movie when i watched it as a teenager bc i didn’t understand schlock but i get it now. and of course i get it now after hearing amy sedaris laugh hard as hell while tomas matos read for the part of greg (the “im totally not gay” football player), julia fox imitating selma blair’s voice which is about two decibels above a whisper, and justice smith exclaiming that a scene is fucked up as he’s reading it. 

pretty awesome to have been on this website long enough to realize i was wrong as a teenager

watched on my iphone in my bed when i couldn’t sleep one night. truly guffawed at some of the acting choices because of how big gerwig is as a performer, but i can’t help but be charmed by her even if it’s kinda way too quirky. it was hard to guess where this was going because it felt (to me) like 90 minutes of two actors trying to “work something out” through goading each other in  performance. probably not as interesting as i’m making it sound? 

at least there’s an amazing scene of gerwig absolutely losing her shit on someone on a pay phone. this movie was brought to you by Dogfish Head Beer™️

araki speak to me in these trying times…….so hard for me to feel optimistic these days in both personal and bigger picture ways, it feels oddly comforting to see something that gets it. the very existence of this makes me feel a little bit better because it’s a reminder that while what happens onscreen is lonely and nihilistic, i’m witnessing it, not alone in the feeling. it’s reaching across time just for me when i watch it.

happy 30th birthday to my boyfriend, who watched this movie when it came out in theaters with his mom when he was 9. he loved it then and he still loves it now.

HAUNTING 

gets into the surreality of trauma really well; it looms over the characters who it affects. bupe’s purple braids in ankle length puddles, nsansa’s wild laughter, shula’s placid calm amongst a throng of mourners. all of it reverberant while stealing sips of alcohol in pantry closets

subjected my partner to this movie, which still bewilders me. watching it is such a strange experience because it feels like it doesn’t give me anything to latch onto. i’m subjected to all its whims in a way that makes me feel mentally nauseous

i kind of always knew i would be a huge sucker for araki and got so effing into this that i forgot i had a class and was 20 mins late. feels like the line delivery of riverdale, feels like the violent road trip anxiety of wild at heart, all with the overt winks of gay pageantry. queerness is an unacceptable disruption, even when the world is ending

yes, of course i liked it. i read the book in high school because i really like palahniuks invisible monsters and had the exact same reactions as i did to parts of the book to parts of the movie, but as an older person, the scoffing was a little more affectionate. i can’t help but like this guys rock shit. tyler durden is absolutely ridiculous but he can throw together a cunty outfit while living in a perpetually wet, slumped over abandoned house. like of course he wasn’t real. 

the kind of thing that actually benefits from being so up it’s own ass. like it’s so unbelievably blunt and snarky, it’s definitively masculine camp. 

and i did lose my fucking mind laughing at the last scene because how did i FORGETTTTT until that very moment!!!

there is practically nothing i can say that would add anything at all but i have to say on a personal note that it really was lost on me how colonization was happening here at the literal level. it’s like clockwork, every few scenes there’s no release and another cavalcade of bulldozers sweeps in and the land is deemed a “military training zone.” there is no training, it’s already happening. this is the “war”

the aliens reminded me so much of the ohms in nausicaa, and then so did the themes, the imioned speeches, the physicality of characters…..i could go on. very funny and absurd, the love story at its center so sweet and believable as fast as it happens. 

rob pattinson is one of the greats, and mark ruffalo needs to be doing way more shit like this, i’m glad he’s free from marvel

march setting me into a tailspin, can’t really my initial thoughts anymore but i really really liked this. 

felt like the right time to see it as my faith in life….living…..the Point was being contested in the swirl of entropy. sooo catty and funny in perfectly the way i love, which others who know me well were quick to mention id like. yet still so contemplative and meditative. we are merely mortal after all. 

found a full brand new pack of gum in my seat after the movie finished lollllll thanks God

i think jason is at a 15 out of 10 in this movie in of energy and it’s a Bit Much. the writing was kind of all over the place, and sometimes i thought we were being led to think that his character was acting this way bc he had a crush on the lead? and the reveal wasn’t that? it was jealousy for a life she doesn’t even have anymore? idk i just got some super misogynist undertones from the way the conflict played out between them that i don’t think this movie is aware of/wants to address, especially when we’re dealing with an arc about how alcoholism is often fueled by being around other alcoholics (basically bringing out the worst qualities in people, revealing their assumptions etc.) i kept thinking he was going to say something truly horrible to her and it never came, which doesn’t really match up to the fact that he’s like “let me kill all these koreans >:)” 

other than that i still really liked how ambitious this premise is and I love Anne Hathaway but what is happening to her hair in this

haven’t finished neon genesis evangelion, one of those things where so many people have been like “You Would Love It”. so much so that it feels like a lot of pressure to have it pay off the way i expect it to. i can tell this was directed by the same guy bc of the wacky perspective shots 

i love how creatively perverted the cinematography is. you’re so aware of the presence of the camera, it’s always teasing at some aspect of their young gal youth in a way that made me so uncomfortable. brutal lessons to be had in this one and would’ve been considered a scary movie when i was a teenager. 

i’ve read audition (and seen the movie) but im interested to see how ryu murakamj ended up writing these characters. i was pretty split on how i felt he wrote women in audition, and the film adaptation also added to this convo in my head.

i was suffering physically from a terrible stye on my eye yet i still desperately needed to make it to this screening. haven’t seen it since the first time in high school and have now decided that willem dafoe as bobby peru is Filthy, Evil, but so Delightful to me. he was so john waters to me that i started craving a rewatch of crybaby, which i also haven’t seen since high school. when i was younger i thought bobby was the scariest character i’ve ever seen and honestly? still holds. 

everyone is at their sexiest in this, and it only makes sense considering how many ionate flames being lit, shots of hands gripping sheets going red, and the lines that only nic cage could pull off. i love this movie! it really is a good valentine’s day movie lol

watched again with my mom. she told us that when she was young she used to rub coke on her skin before sunbathing just like the sisters do in the opening scene on the beach, which i didn’t even notice the first time. 

it makes sense that this particular story is the one that transcends its locality. i wish for more on the time skip versions of how the family evolves, but maybe they were meant to be more evocative and less explanatory. i like that this doesn’t end with a full resolve, since this really happened. and the consequences will continue to reverberate generationally.

what i enjoyed the most is that the way the story is told is not played up for camp or comedy, it’s serious about its subject, and i felt at times that it felt incredibly protective of her. it reminded me of the substance because of the way that women are taught to destroy themselves in order to achieve “beauty”, “beauty” being the mask of incredibly harmful and oppressive societal values. but i did Not laugh when i watched this. i just felt really really sad. :/ 

very worth your time if you search it up on youtube and have 45 mins to spare. i miss you karen carpenter. you should’ve been allowed live a longer, less painful life

there will be nights when im awake for long enough to go back in time and listen to music and watch movies that i gouged myself on when i was in high school, dreaming of something so close yet so distant. movies about love in which i kept thinking, "how beautiful," when nowadays, knee deep in it, im thinking "what the fuck is happening i know nothing." movies about getting to know who you really are, what you want, who you will be forever. movies about falling into place. every movie is like a dream a small part of me would wish for every time i would watch it. rewatching most of them now, i can feel this restless coming of age part of me falling away to reveal my conscious self. i cannot help but mourn the little parts of me that dreamed so relentlessly, so deliriously, alone in the dark of my dusty basement, only the glow of the tv illuminating my moonstruck face. im never going to know the girl who saw the breakfast club again. never gonna know the girl who cried at the oddest of moments in the virgin suicides. the girl who pressed her ear up to the speakers when knives chau is talking to scott and "anthems of a 17 year old girl" is playing in the background.

i need to unwind, unpack this part of me. maybe then ill stop going back in time and feeling like im suffocating.

i am a senior in high school. half the year is gone. half the year remains. 

i have spent half of my high school career loathing it and the other half secretly liking it, believing it can't end since i have felt this way since forever. 

i'm finally terrified of being away from home. im finally liking where i am. but my knuckles drag a little. i sort of feel unfulfilled because of what the movies said about being this age. 

the cure: gorging myself on movies about high school or have been obsessed with in high school so i begin to relish hallways and try to what it feels like to have to be here. 

this is a specific watchlist for movies i've seen and haven't. i'm so fucking sentimental it hurts. i plan to have watched every movie on this list until june 12, when classes end.

here are watches of the year that meant a lot. this is the first year in my life i got any sense of seriousness about watching movies. in chronological order, btw

below is a letter to a website that is not a person but a collection of many people and things that are good.

dear letterboxd,

you made my life so much more exciting in the smallest of ways. I first discovered you in the spring earlier this year, but only had transferred all my diary info from a list on imdb after a friend told me about this site.

I immediately fell in love with this community of people who are far more ionate about film than I am, and hoped to fit somewhere in there too.

I discovered around the summer that I could transfer what I've been hiding in my journals to "reviews" on letterboxd, and that people liked them. It gave me a new motivation to write more, and watch more films, above all. Other people shared the same obsession of lists and logging as I did, even if it was only for movies. I had found a place to share things with other people.

I didn't write as much as I should have, but I still am constantly inspired by the reviews I read and the films I watch. This has led me to believe in myself more and meet intelligent and inspiring people on the internet who found refuge in the same things I did. I met people through twitter and just by reading their work. I laughed and cried with others on movies I had seen for the first time, even if I saw them by myself. I had meaningful conversations with loved ones about star wars and let mistress america take up spaces of explanation through a tough relationship with my older sister.

I am a way different person that I could even imagine since discovering this website. I've lost and loved a lot. I'm still healing from things that should've hurt less a long time ago. but films and this website gave me new ways to cope while still being inspired.

here's to a year of personal growth and love, for myself and others. I am supposed to be writing my college essay that's due tonight at midnight, but I had this idea that I couldn't shake so we'll call this a warm up.

may the next year be great and full or more films and writing and good conversation. and of course, it'll all be logged on this little website.
