Beware: Children at Play

It’s interesting when a film manages to be better and worse than the film it is ripping off from. Because in a strange way, it ends up being something more fulfilling than the other.

Clearly, this is another killer children film made in the wake of Children of the Corn. And as you’d expect, it’s a piece of shit. Bad acting, with the children and adults fighting to see who could be the worst overall, stretches of nothing much happening, and standard filmmaking, although at times, it’s clear a Steadicam was used, giving some moments an extra sense of craftwork. This feeling disappears shortly afterwards.

But here’s where things differ. Although this film didn’t have the talent, Children of the Corn didn’t have the balls.

The kills in this film are quite gory, although it all builds up to one of the most wonderfully ridiculous endings to a low-grade horror film. If you’ve seen these sort of films time and time again, and you wished that the children will all be killed off once and for all… consider your wish granted. It was the high and low point of my weekend laughing at the sight of children being murdered by adults and trying their best to act dead, even if they are clearly moving. Bonus points for the kid getting his head blown off. What more could you expect from a Troma movie?

Overall, this was a pretty meh film, that goes along with some flourishes of gore (and a moment of really unnecessary sexual assault, although it now holds the unfortunate distinction of being the most poorly acted assault I’ve seen in a film), before the ending happens and delivers some truly wonderful trash. Watch it with a room full of psychopaths.
