laughing and crying you know it's the same release

there were more than a few transcendent ten minute stretches scattered around but it didn't all come together for me. this movie is PACKED with Big Ideas tm and at a certain point the characters and narrative are just subsumed by them. like a lot of stuff now that is in so much conversation with everything its trying to say, by its own place in the media landscape, that it forgets to keep telling the story.

Sure they made this one for me but still. I was watching this completely disconnected from my outside self, from time, from place. It finished and I thought it was either 1h40m or 2h10m. I was back there.
The trans reading is essentially textual - Maddy returned to tell Owen they're really a magical girl waiting to be reawakened in the true reality of fiction just aches. I can't wait to rewatch now knowing the ending which I thought was perfectly brutal. Happy endings are only on TV - and for trans people.
