One of my absolute favorite coming of age stories and a grade A in storytelling. The final lines sum up a timeless sentiment that will echo for all of eternity.

When a notorious goofball director with a heart of gold is given an actual stage to create an epic, Dogma is what you get. For this size of a film and dick joke humor, it’s awesomely accessible and fun. 

It was so great to see it on the big screen after all these years and 720p being the maximum resolution I had ever seen before today.

The John Wick standard dropped pretty low with this one. Maximum cheese with a little bit of fun mixed throughout. I don’t think there was a ball to begin with to drop here, but it felt real rough around the edges.

Had the pleasure of catching the 4K remaster on the big screen for my first time watching this. Everything about it is stellar, with everything standing the test of time. To this day, one of the greatest romantic comedy dramas I have ever seen.

Another really solid entry from the MCU, proving that we don’t need familiar heroes to carry a good plot device. This one definitely put me in my feels, which is impressive for a superhero movie.

A year in the editing room!

(because I’m really good at putting fun projects on the backburner)

A great sophomore banger from the Philippou brothers, who have proved that their creative angles on classic horror tropes mixed with phenomenal casting can really create an intense and fun horror atmosphere. Like Talk to Me, this doesn’t need to rely on crappy jump scares, but instead propels itself on jaw dropping effects and memorable horror moments. 

The plot isn’t air tight, and some of the writing feels like a ‘fuck it, this will work’ moment, but the sound design and atmosphere of this thing leaves it to be just as memorable as Talk to Me with more care to the character building. 

I’m so glad these guys graduated from YouTube to becoming staples in the modern horror genre. Cant wait to see what they come up with next.

I wasn’t sure how Tim Robinson’s comedy style would pan out over a feature length. It turns out, peppering those punch lines and mannerisms throughout a pretty cinematic modern comedy really gives a breath of hope to a genre that’s been struggling for a while.

This one feels the most James Bond-ish of the trilogy, but it’s a step back up from Temple of Doom and one hell of a Nazi ass kicking good time.

In a long standing tradition of video game adaptations being hot garbage, this is no exception. If all the pointless fluff was cut out of this movie it would be about 15 minutes long. That being said, it fits right in with the timeline of 2000’s techno-action movies that all dream of having a fraction of the character that The Matrix has. Angelina Jolie’s hotness couldn’t save this, even in her prime.

I’ve used my Temple of Doom effect example in several conversations recently. Essentially, ToD leaned really far into ‘made for kids kinda’ territory, making it my favorite when I was younger, but realizing it lacks a lot of sustenance once I got older, making it my least favorite of the trilogy now. The same goes for The Lost World VS Jurassic Park. Still a rad time through all the goofiness, though.

I often forget this came out in 81. Way before its time, and one of the best examples of peak Hollywood blockbuster cinema. They don’t make action flicks like this anymore.

Finally getting around to watching this, I think I had higher expectations than what was delivered. It’s a well packed script and a beautiful execution, but it didn’t really dive into any real emotional state. While the premise was gripping, it felt pretty surface level, all things considered.

I appreciate it as one of the earlier A24 films that started to propel the company into mainstream, and I love that it’s a very accessible arthouse film about AI, but it could have easily been an episode of Black Mirror instead of a feature.

I have a soft spot for this one since I was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid and BEGGED my mom to let me watch it on VHS when it came out (I was 8). Looking back now, this feels like a Temple of Doom situation where is your favorite as a kid because it’s full of dumb memorable action, but later you realize it’s all style over substance. Still a nostalgic good time, but not nearly the same grasp as the OG. I also feel like it was all downhill for this franchise from here.

One of the most influential movies of my teenage years, and damn does it hold up well. There’s not much to say about this that hasn’t already been said. Jurassic Park rules.

I’ve had the pleasure of touring in a bus with a rock duo, and while some aspects of that life range true to this story, it felt more like the time my 7th grade basketball team lost in the semi-finals and never talked to each other again. If only the Jacobs Jaguars had a Penny Lane.

It’s cute, endearing, and a pretty tight script all things considered. It explores a lot of nuances of old age in a slightly tongue-in-cheek kind of way, which is unique for modern films. 

To be frank, I have never had positive relationships with older people in my life, so the immediate sentiment for the elderly isn’t really there for me. That being said, I do have somewhat of a heart, so I obviously fell in love with Thelma and Ben throughout the journey. It just took me a little while to get there.

I think I would have had a better time with this if it leaned into absurdity a little more, at very least with the editing.

I love the Cohen brothers, but this one is a miss for me. The chaotic storylines of interwoven relationships clashing together is interesting for a little bit, but doesn’t hold much substance by the end. Not to mention, it felt like the climax was in the middle of the movie.

If it wasn’t for excellent direction and an all-star cast, this would be the most forgettable story I have seen in a while.

I usually struggle to really get into vampire flicks, but this one is SO MUCH fun. What an amazing setting for this story, too. It’s also cool to see Michael B Jordan absolutely slay his roles through all of Coogler’s movies.

The aesthetics and atmosphere are flawless in this, but I wish some more aspects of the story were more fleshed out (no pun intended). I’d love to see a directors cut that gives us more solution to the Chicago backstory and seeing a deeper role from the Native Americans. 

What a treat of a film.

There are very few folk horrors that reach this level of intricacy. The first watch is spent wondering what the hell is going on, while subsequent watches are spent noticing little details that all paint a pretty clear picture. 

The 2.5hr runtime somehow still feels not enough, wanting to live inside the commune even longer to make sense of all the horror. 

Truly the most unique folk-horror experience since the OG Wicker Man.

The real gang was the hoodlums we made along the way.

I enjoyed the easter eggs I guess..

Holy shit this is one of the greatest tragedies ever made. I feel like I just watched 3 amazing films subtlety intertwined in the perfect way.

I love movies and I love Kevin Smith.

A refreshing ride in the midst of a tired slasher era.

Probably the best body horror there will ever be

I needed a comfort movie tonight and it has been a while since I watched this absolute gem of a movie. Emotional grounding succeeded.

A ion project for Jesse Eisenberg that turns out to be a very compelling character study. It feels endearing, charming, slightly painful, and very real.

It’s one of those journeys that doesn’t say too much, but gives the characters space to breathe and become three-dimensional, bringing the audience very close to them by the end.

There are so many facets to this that are creative and inspiring. There are some facets of this that seem to lose their way, but there are many shining moments in this fun character-study style horror. This is almost a masterpiece for its budget and time period, but instead ends up being little more than a mentionable thrill ride.

The only thing noticeable through the vomit-inspired color palette are the dozen obnoxious SFX jump-scares trying desperately to create something palpable out of this greasy nothing-burger.

Possibly the greatest love letter to cinema. This reminded me how fortunate I was to have been able to work with 35mm film as a projectionist for a couple years before we switched to digital. Nothing beats having every tangible frame between your fingertips, being integral to the film continuing to play. Just light, film, and the warm comfort of a projection booth (that had its own bathroom, by the way)

I haven’t seen any of the Terminators since I was a kid, and after finally rewatching this one, either it’s the ONLY one that I’ve seen or all the moments are so grand it’s the only one that actually stuck with me.

Either way, it’s one of the best action movies ever made and WAY before its time.

This was a fun one, especially for someone who spent 10 years working at summer camp. 

The downside comes with how often this thing blueballed me by skipping out on the fun side of horror. The action that happens off-screen and the immediate scene cuts are cute on occasion, but left me hungry for way more than we got out of this.

On the plus side, a lot of the jokes land. More summer camp movies, please. And when they are horror-themed, let me SEE THE FUN PARTS!

I’ve spent a day on Tangier Island many years ago, and it was such an impactful experience. This doc does it great justice by creating a rich atmosphere and letting the culture of the people breathe through the screen. 

It is less of a DANGER: CLIMATE CHANGE film and more of a community film with a very impactful ending. It doesn’t tell you what to think, what to believe, what’s right, or what’s wrong. Instead it shows you people and life in a beautifully cinematic way. 

Through this lens, Tangier lives on forever.

Interesting and heartwarming, but I wish it leaned into the complications of immigration, segregation, and family life a little more. Great execution and a beautiful subject, though. Lots of great archival footage.

Equal parts cute and sad, and an interesting look inside an overlooked part of bird conservation.

A lighthearted horror-comedy that hits the par pretty straight on. It’s delightfully ridiculous and devilishly fun. It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares, and leaves its memorable moments in some off the wall practical (and digital) effects. It’s not a very deep story, but for a surface scratcher, this is a lot of fun.

One of the most unique and naturally amazing films I’ve seen.

About as ‘good and entertaining’ as an episode of Big Bang Theory. I’m surprised they didn’t add a laugh track to tell us where the billion terrible punch lines are.

Super cute and creative with dynamite casting. It’s not as serious and critical on modern society as Bong’s big hits, but it’s a fresh addition to the bangers of original films we’ve had lately.

Sam is great as Cap, but this really falls short of taking a stance or saying anything. It’s fun, but that’s about it.

While the pacing crawls a little too slow at times, I appreciate how much further this leans into character than camp. It’s also surprisingly well done for the subject matter at hand. 

The concept is completely off the rails, but it does such a good job at seeming grounded in reality, all things considered.

A nice juicy nostalgia-burger that doesn’t quite lean hard enough into Mooney’s absurdist dry humor. It is a hell of a goofy fun ride, though, with casting and cameos that turned me into Leo DiCaprio’s OUATIH meme.

I was only 11 when Y2K happened, but this was pretty much the same thing I experienced that fateful New Years Eve.

Is ghostploitation a genre?

I love the idea and public response to this a lot more than I liked the execution. To be something so innovative, though, deserves a lot of good credit. 

I LOVE the idea of millions of people losing their marbles in their nice Christian households over thinking Satan’s poltergeists were invading their lives through the television set. It must have been such a magical production to be a part of.

Not to mention paving the way for found footage horror, a subgenre that caused every single one of us at least one sleepless night. 

Mark this one down as a pillar of horror history.

I enjoyed this a lot more the second time around. Its witty writing, stellar execution, and bangin soundtrack really make it a classic. 

I’ve seen Dan Tyminski a handful of times now and will forever love Man of Constant Sorrow.

I realized I needed to rate this a little higher because I’m pretty stoked about seeing part 2 when it comes out. I also want to actually see the play now. I’m officially a Wicked fan.
