Would have loved a longer run time and some further back story of the hunting but for the most part...this was just...awesome?

I love the character designs, the pressure, the adventure and the style. It is simply gorgeous and the score accompanies such strong vocal performances too.

Certainly ridiculous at some times and very typical 'Predator' set-up, but it has enough changes to the story and flair to keep it apart.

Dare I say...the best of its franchise?

An emotional powerhouse, full of striking performances and messaging.

As a hostage film, it falters and has one too many impracticalities for it to flow organically. Plus, some of the ing character designs were a bit one-dimensional (such as the FBI leader, the cops, the two workers at the bank).

I loved this film don't get me wrong. Have we seen this before? Absolutely. And if i was going off emotions alone, it would be a super high score.

But I have to put my foot down on its negatives, there was a perfect film here, but unfortunately is weighed by a few things.

Met with a gorgeous score, a rustic noughties voyeurism and haunting real footage, Cropsey explores the power of urban legend in communities.

I'm worried I had this one overhyped for me cause I wasn't sure by the end of it, if I had been explained EVERYTHING in its context.

But for the most part, it explores the story very well. This is a docufilm held with care and no doubt one to re-watch in the future.

Actual proof of how some films do not NEED to be a comedy.

Some really strange choices here in both writing and story. and that is not GOOD strange!

Anyway, it has some fun set pieces and moments. Characters are varied in fun to dreadful. The gore is appreciated but also a bit messily captured which makes for frustrating shock / suspense.

Colour me so surprised with Disney's Descendants. The tunes are here, the characters are actually 2-dimensional and story is both nostalgic and fresh.

I kinda wish this did not get the Disney Channel treatment because it has so much potential to be a big blockbusters with budget and that is where the film is weighed down for me.

However, on the other hand, I think this also works for it, giving it a dorky sorta 2010s feel that feels both backwards and progressive.

Chenoweth is absolutely fabulous here and dare I say, one of the best performances we have seen in this universe.

IDK, I had so much fun and kinda can't wait to watch the sequels.

In a sub-genre done to death, how do you make yourself stick out? Well, this is how!!!

It's got a real zhush that was also evident in its sibling distant cousin Bring Her Back that I saw recently.

There are some plot holes, some strange behaviour from our characters and some gaps in the lore which could've (if amended) bumped up the score.

But other than those, totally worth a watch and thoroughly effective.

Lurid, terrifying and undeniably powerful throughout.
As much as I had my gripes with it, the Racka Racka brothers are so damn talented and ionate that I wanna give them their 10's in anything they set out to do.

I am gonna argue that although we have seen this film a 100 times before and that grief exploration element isn't exactly fresh.........their work is still so unique, within flair and full of horror finesse.

Performances here are so thoroughly strong and they are met with a pretty tight script overall. As it plays out, there are few too many 'boot crabs' to ignore in its plot.

Plus, at times it lacks a background to the scares which I know they probably wrote all about and are saving it for a prequel. I do believe it would have had a higher score from me if we had more to Laura's history and further history to the supernatural elements.

I think with these kind of bread crumb stories...it's not about revealing it all towards the end. I would prefer if they didn't actually...but please ensure these breadcrumbs left to decipher are decent in magnitude.

That being said, it is such a refreshing film to see getting a major release. Horror is a genre that will always invite you to new places, new emotions and new quandaries. I hope these directors make as many films as they can.

They've got something to say, and may be the people to get Horror that 2nd best picture win!

Welp, it was a pretty lacklustre thrill ride, wasn't it?

Pretty slim storyline with a wacky pace and strange character designs throughout. Much like other things being censored right now, it is quite clear that the queerness was removed from this because after all...where was the flavour?

Proof you can have a soundtrack, costumes, setting and atmosphere down to a T and still manage to create something lifeless.

The brilliance of these films was the storytelling which was so non-existent in this. Fina Strazza is an absolute standout here however and makes for a wonderful character / performance. Could not believe she was used more at times.

The kills aren't bad but lack a certain je ne sais quoi, like a special charm that the others in the franchise have.

For a slasher, it delivers for the most part...but have we not learned how to evolve in this genre?

When it is done to death. Do it different. It's not that hard.
Very disappointing. Clearly a leftover movie from its writers and lacks a concealed focus around being unique and more importantly CUNTY!!!

Bring back CUNTINESS in films like these. Maybe only certain eras of filmmaking exudes it.

You see what happens when you poison other people's mind with ideas?

Crafted with an emotionally intelligent hand, The Gift is not a film. It is an experience. It is life and death shaking hands. Both frighteningly tense and so thoroughly realistic in its turns and takes. Proof in the bow-wrapped box, you can reinvent the thriller with expansions of genre-definition and style. Whilst also retaining logic and practicality to the method.

Most will argue that this film is a Thriller first and foremost. Which is true, but when it is Horror...it is in its true form. The bellowing laugh that echoes throughout this story, whether it be irony or comeuppance or karma, is so incredibly.......spooky.

It is a type of fear most people would be hesitant to it to. That we CAN be monsters and that sometimes our common and casual identity is something we need to transform.

I have changed (I hope) and will continue to, and with a film like this, I hope I always do.

The key archetype of iveness here is so important for an audience to reconcile with. Actions have consequences of course, but so do our LACK of actions. Whether it be a bystander effect or dismissing a whisper, letting these ideas "take hold" has a real power, often without realising.

One of my biggest fears in life, is to feel like I am not a kind or nice person to interact with. Tenfold, would have rather have murder on my police report than "overall assh*le" written on it.

iveness also is quite cleverly juxtaposed here with Gordo himself. He is not scaling the building to attack or setting up death traps to test those around him.

He is like you and me, making him one of the most alarming antagonists I have ever seen. He doesn't need to threaten or kill anyone...he needs to work with the shadows. The fear, the anxiety and the paranoia are his weapons.
Because once again...

it's amazing how an idea can take a hold and really bring a person down.

The little gifts, the gestures, the considerations, the looks,

It's all in the eyes, you see.

As we get older, it becomes more common for us to receive less comfort. So, in dire situations like this, we turn to our loved ones. However, what is so horrifying about Robyn's desperation...is that it depends on the one person she deems could fix it.

When I think of the quality of this medium,
I think of films that offer a timeless nature to them.
Not only does The Gift provide atmosphere, terror and style...it is so cleverly written and full of excellent performances all round. Its comprehensive themes are so important for anyone to grapple with and it provides lessons about life that remain true everytime I watch it. It's rather biblical in a sense with the lessons and guidance.

Funny, when someone lies to you enough, you just stop believing anything they say.

I hope we all take a moment to think of our actions everyday. It is a terrifying thought to me that one day my past will hold me able. So, aim to be better and aim to love, uplift and embrace all of those around you.

You would think as a major fan of Vivarium, I would've been completely here for The Surfer, and albeit...I had a wonderful time and was thoroughly entertained....this was a complete misfire for me.

I wanna applaud the cinematographer, the sound design and overall production on this journey. It looks gorgeous, sounds scary and creates an overall frightening atmosphere very well.

Unfortunately, it very rarely has any substance and chooses style for the most part. I am a firm believer in the fact that we can create stories based around style but still have them be practical and structured.

Quite frankly, a hallucination or dream sequence ain't gonna cut it for me from now on, in filmmaking. Not only does this guarantee confusion but often proves an easy by in storytelling.

You can have art + style and still make it make sense. We got the themes of toxic masculinity here but why are we showing it to our audience?

And I am sure if you watched a video essay on it later, maybe you can decipher it. But would that make for a better film...I unfortunately don't think so :(.

There are some things I absolutely adore about this film. There is certain kind of feeling capture. A feeling of isolation and loneliness within.

Unfortunately, its entire concept is weighed down by uneven performances, an incredibly tepid screenplay and a bunch of psychological film clichés.

I appreciate the vision but proof that casting 3 modern A-Listers does not produce quality.

I found Hurry Up Tomorrow and its themes to be quite all over the place. And by placing such a musical figure in this role, it did not give the intended effect at all of what his character goes through.

Also full shade to The Weeknd but it is hard to complain about this atmosphere when your artistry is often facilitating behaviour like it.

That being said, things change and maybe this was meant to be his reconstruction of his persona. Unfortunately, it was maybe a little too soon and if anything, it would've worked better as a biopic.

In all of its demented and vile glory, The Sadness is a fabulous attack at the modern zombie genre. For the most part, it succeeds in this!

I am pretty sure that the Pandemic commentary felt half-baked and maybe struggled a bit with finding a correct thesis for it. Once again though, not a terrible aspect, just a bit wonky between characters and story.

The other thing is, I'm all here for shock and extremity but there were a couple of times in which it felt added purely for this value and not for the sake of the story.

Anyway, I really loved this overall, it had a lot of style and uniqueness amongst its peers.

Sometimes all you need is a nice story. And for the most part, The Life List has got it down pat. That is until the cringeness comes through.

I think the biggest problem here is that it is scared of being too sincere. It is already sickly sweet so I think they believed they needed to up the comedy. But really, they could've just kept it emotional?

IDK, this just did not help.
However, when it is completely sincere, it got me quite sentimental and with hearts in my eyes.

There is a brilliant concept here that is unfortunately weighed down by the Netflix quality and the soapy American casting.

Hey, so this wasn't bad. It was pretty much what you'd expect from its plot. Rather simple though for the franchise and lacks a bit of focus around themes and such. IDK, they go to space or something.

There are some fabulous character expansions here though and some hilarious moments. Worth a watch.

To continue the franchise, we have this installment which acts in pretty familiar territory but has enough uniqueness and story design to keep it standing out. I particularly love the good/bad characteristics angle.

It sorta grapples with a "true question of good morality" for a young audience which is hard to do and this does it well.

Sometimes, the we can't control the things that harm us.

I was genuinely surprised with Stitch! The Movie. Not only was it a solid successor to its predecessor, it packs in some sleek world building and hilarious moments.

Although nothing groundbreaking, it's undeniably charismatic and clearly has that same ionate team behind. Surprised this didn't go to cinemas and extra surprised it doesn't have as much talk because it has got some iconic moments!

This didn't quite succeed for me but maybe I'm not the right person to be judging it?

It is very sweet and charming but lacks a real drive or purpose for me to embrace it more.

The choice for it to be leaned into more of a documentary, was although not a bad choice, but still hindered it for me in the whole Shakespeare angle.

Maybe my expectations were wrong, IDK?
That being said, it's a fun story and an enjoyable watch!

Can you tell me about elevated horror? Is it a recent concept due to its popularity?

Or has it always been there within the genre.

Much like Ridley Scott's Alien, Cronenberg's The Fly has everything to offer for creature feature goodness...and gives you even more.

From outstanding practical effects to stupendously excellent performances all round, I can't help but think that the flaws are nigh.

It's frightening and funny. 2 things that can define a horror film's quality as impactful when needed. This is impactful all over, and I'd like you to find a film that was influenced by this over the years.
Point being, there are too many.

TREND ALERT
Horror movies in the 2000s kill off racists in satisfying ways!

This was a big step down from the previous quality of the other films. It has some iconic kills nonetheless, but I would say it struggles to find its footing especially in style and characters.

That being said, still watchable even if it is super cringe at times. The transition from practical effects to CGI is also one of the biggest mistakes every made. Let's hope 'Bloodlines' tones the CGI down.

Anyway, it exists, it is watchable but unfortunately falls short mostly. Also, it is ridiculously short!

I am starting to believe that "this was dumb" is the new "I didn't get it".

It's rare that new entries in franchises advance the story or outdo the original. Final Destination 3 here feels in full form. It's not only packed with a new budget, it's got rhythm, themes and a new style of fear.

This offers a unique perspective for death's collection. Not only are our characters aware of their deaths, but they have a clue to how they are going to die. It's an absolutely brilliant new element for the franchise and makes for some fabulous theatrics.

You are always going to be served high stakes in these films but this entry promises PRODUCTION!!!!!!!!! It has some absolutely incredible set designs (Drive-Thru, Rollercoaster, Home Warehouse) and also some enviable practical effects.

This is an example of movie-making at its finest. There are some things in the script that could've been a bit tighter or adjusted but for the most part it acquires that sick humour we love.

Evidently, we are always going to have themes of death and morality, yet this entry brings in the perspective of responsibility. The challenges of surviving against those who perished, is a theme so important to something like this.

I find it really disheartening to see people label this franchise as gore porn because up until this point, they have all mixed dramatics with gore, with themes and with emotion very graciously. It makes me wonder why people write off some things without consideration.

I suppose people think this is atheistic or perhaps against theology altogether. But the thing is, Final Destination reinvents the ideology. It has something to say about death in all variants and maybe that is why people hate them?

Death is not Heaven or Hell anymore. Death is not an eternal abyss. It is an unrelenting force and one that will toy you if you give in.

I think we have the best performances here too, and some exceptionally funny characters which in the rare case, I thought the humour complemented everything else.

An absolutely gorgeous and beautiful story. Have we seen this type of thing before? Well, yes!

It still has all the goods for its purpose but stands out amongst its crowd of 'saving the day' genre films.

I really appreciate the lens of both New Zealand folks and the additional lens of Samoan people specifically though this story. I personally could've thought it could've been a tad shorter and perhaps a tighter script in parts.

There are certain themes here that should have been explored more thoroughly within the story. (Grief, suicide, fate and purpose).

However, a nonetheless beautiful feature with a star-makig performance from our lead.

I can be a snob when it comes to film sometimes...
I adore high critical art and love a good provocative picture.
I also adore patented Hollywood, or hardcore genre defining adventures.

All of these films are regarded by me as either having transformed the medium, done something for viewer progression/development or have personally shaped me.

I understand that this is my opinion, but damn, I reckon I could write a few good essay's on these justifying why they are important.

  • A Simple Favor
  • Assassination Nation

A film that leaves me breathless, every time I watch it. It's relevant, real and raw whilst still also managing to be a genre-bending, camp AF indie thriller. The very relevant yet outlandish plot of Assassination Nation makes me think the future is nigh. How much do we let technology control us and perhaps more importantly, how much do we control technology? Anger, fear and anxiety are all mechanisms we can weaponise. At least that is what this film taught me. Not only is it a terrifying truth, it is suggested to be in the hands of the wrong people. So whose responsibility is it to weed out the fear mongering? Or it simply too late?

Watch my favourite trailer for Assassination Nation here.

"Don't take your hate out on me, I just got here."

  • Beast

A film that has never managed to shake me out of its grasp since I first saw it at Sun Theatre in Yarraville. Beast is undeniably the most undiscovered British thriller ever. It's scary how transformative this film is.
Watch my favourite trailer for Beast here.

I know you understand, because we're the same.

  • Before I Fall

A film that tackles the teen movie tropes in a profound, delicate and honest form.
Its aesthetic is gorgeous and its story remains valuable for all audiences.
Watch my favourite trailer for Before I Fall here.

It doesn't matter what I think. What's important is what you think.

  • Better Watch Out

A film that perfectly engages its audience and blends all the genres needed to achieve it's full potential.
    It's sly, clever and snarky.
Watch my favourite trailer for Better Watch Out here.

    You're 'Home Alone-ing' him?

  • BlacKkKlansman

We have a real super power in this art form, in which an ending can just rock an entire audience. Not only does this film speak to a diverse audience of people, it reminds us of the pure hatred we all have within us...and that with the right green light from others, it just spreads. This is a superbly crafted look at racism; that Spike Lee is so self-aware of how America is, he manages to capture that perception on screen.

Watch my favourite trailer for BlacKkKlansman here.

That hatred, doesn't that piss you off!?

  • Candyman

Say it. Say it. Say it. Say it. Say it.
    Candy-mofo-man truly is that hitch!
Such a simple story turned extravagant in DaCosta's directing. I usually find horror and fear to be incredibly subjective.

  • Coco
  • Coraline

Coraline is a masterclass in whimsical storytelling, dedicated production and downright original filmmaking.
It's a film that provides such raw feelings of wonder and explores childhood identity effortlessly.
Watch my favourite trailer for Coraline here.

They say even the proudest spirit can be broken... with love.
