The Criterion Century #49:

Never Fear (dir. Ida Lupino, 1950)

I had no idea what this was about before I watched it, and I vaguely expected a film noir based on the poster. Turns out it’s a melodrama about a dancer who contracts polio, and it’s a very interesting snapshot what that was like before the Salk vaccine. I was especially fascinated by the scene where the rehab patients all do a wheelchair square dance.

Years covered: 1920, 1923, 1924,…

Who Are You, Charlie Brown?

2021

★★½ 1

This is basically three different shows smushed together -

1) A Peanuts short about Charlie Brown trying to write a school essay.

2) A surface-level documentary about Charles M. Schulz’s life and career.

3) A DVD featurette where celebrity fans of Peanuts talk about why they love Peanuts.

They’re all adequate, and they don’t add up to much.
